Central Christian Church is part of a restoration movement that arose in various parts of the U.S. in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. It was clear as the frontiers of America were spreading westward that the boundaries of denominationalism were doing nothing but harm to the church established by Jesus Christ. It was out of this context that this movement began by individuals such as Thomas and Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone, and Walter Scott. These individuals sought to restore the church found in the New Testament and pled for Christian unity on the basis of the Bible in order to reach the lost world for Christ.
Other churches rooted in this heritage can be found all around the globe and are most often known as
- 1) Christian Churches and Churches of Christ
- 2) Churches of Christ a Capella
- 3) Disciples of Christ.

The current building was erected in 1882. A Christian Church congregation purchased the building in 1944 and has worshiped here ever since. During much of the 1940’s and 1950’s there were two Christian Churches in Jonesborough: Central Christian Church and First Christian Church. In 1955, a joint meeting was held, and it was decided to unite the two congregations into one. On March 22, 1955, Central Christian Church accepted the merger and has since served the greater Jonesborough area in its present location.
